Nakdae Falls, Cheongdo: The Free Two-Tier, 30-Metre Waterfall at Its Early-Summer Best

No parking fee, no entrance fee — and yet one of Cheongdo's Eight Scenic Wonders awaits. In June, Nakdae Falls is exactly that kind of place.

Stand before Nakdae Falls — a two-tiered cascade plunging some 30 metres down the southern slope of Namsan in Beomgok-ri, Hwayang-eup, Cheongdo-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do — and it becomes immediately clear why this spot has been named one of Cheongdo's Eight Scenic Wonders. Early summer, specifically June, is when the falls truly come into their own: spring rains have topped up the water level just right, and the main rainy season has yet to arrive.

Why June Is the Best Time to Visit Nakdae Falls

In June, Nakdae Falls strikes the finest balance of the year. Snowmelt and spring rainfall have built up a healthy flow, yet the full monsoon season hasn't kicked in, meaning clear skies and good visibility are more likely than not. The falls framed by lush early-summer greenery make for a truly spectacular sight. Best of all, the peak summer crowds haven't arrived yet, so you can enjoy the nature around you in relative peace — one of the great pleasures of a June visit.

The Spectacle of a 30-Metre, Two-Tier Waterfall

Nakdae Falls' defining feature is its two-tier structure, dropping roughly 30 metres in total. The flow strikes an intermediate rock shelf midway down before cascading onward to the base, giving the waterfall the look of silk ribbon unfurling from the sky. Craggy rock formations and dense forest surround the falls on all sides, making it a popular spot for photography.

At the foot of the falls, a small plunge pool has formed — a perfect place to rest and let the sound of the water wash over you. The area around a waterfall is generally known to be three or four degrees cooler than the surrounding region, making this an ideal retreat from the early-summer heat.

Getting There and Trail Information

Nakdae Falls is located at San 118-5, Beomgok-ri, Hwayang-eup, Cheongdo-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do. By car, exit at Cheongdo IC, head towards Hwayang-eup, and follow the signs for Beomgok-ri. Searching 'Nakdae Falls' or 'Cheongdo Beomgok-ri Nakdae Falls' in your navigation app will take you directly there.

From the car park to the falls is roughly a 10–15-minute walk. The path starts out fairly gentle but steepens as you approach the waterfall, so comfortable footwear is recommended. June can bring the occasional sudden shower, so an umbrella or light rain jacket is worth packing.

Useful Tips Before You Go

One of Nakdae Falls' greatest advantages is that it is completely free — no parking fee, no entrance fee. For families in particular, being able to enjoy this natural spectacle without any financial outlay is a real draw.

The recommended visiting window is between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., when sunlight hits the falls at just the right angle for the most beautiful views. Weekday visits are quieter than weekends, and on a weekday morning in June you may well have the falls almost entirely to yourself.

There are few facilities in the immediate vicinity of the falls, so bring your own drinks and snacks. Take care near the water's edge, as the rocks can be slippery.
