Sorokdo in June: A Summer Walk Through Lavender Maengmundong Fields and Pine Forests

Sorokdo is connected to the mainland by a bridge, so you can visit without taking a boat — come and explore the maengmundong flower fields that begin blooming in June.

As early-summer breezes begin to roll in during June, the small island of Sorokdo in Goheung, South Jeolla Province, is gradually painted in shades of violet. Beneath the pine forests, sweeping fields of maengmundong (lilyturf) create a landscape that is truly unique to this season.

Why June Is Special

Maengmundong blooms from June and can be enjoyed through August, with white and purple petals on display from early to late summer. The period from early to mid-June marks the start of flowering, and it is when the contrast between the fresh green leaves and the just-opening purple blossoms is at its most vivid.

During the summer season, the pine forest transforms into a purple-tinted world set against emerald coastal cliffs and massive rocks worn by time — a perfect harmony of sea, forest, and flowers all in one view.

Summer Scenery on Sorokdo

Sorokdo is a compact island — 3.74 km² in area with a 14.0 km coastline — and its size makes it perfectly manageable to explore on foot. As you stroll along the walking paths laid out across the island, you will come across clusters of maengmundong nestled beneath the pine trees.

Along the coastal paths, you can take in the dramatic scenery formed by the blue sea and jagged rock formations while small purple and white flowers spread like a carpet beneath your feet — an experience full of unexpected charm. In the afternoon, sunlight filters through the pines to cast a play of light and shadow that has made the area a popular spot for photography.

Getting There

Sorokdo has been connected to the mainland since Sorokdaegyo Bridge opened on 3 March 2009, so visitors can drive directly to the island without taking a boat. Simply cross Sorokdaegyo Bridge at the southern tip of the Goheung Peninsula and you arrive on Sorokdo.

From Seoul, take an express bus to Goheung Terminal, then continue to Sorokdo by local bus or taxi. By private car via the West Coast Expressway and South Coast Expressway, the journey takes approximately four and a half hours.

Visitor Tips

Early to mid-June is the ideal time to see the maengmundong at their best, so it is worth planning your visit around this window. Allow two to three hours to explore the whole island at a leisurely pace, and set off early in the morning so you do not miss the beautiful afternoon light.

Entry is free and the island can be walked without any additional fees, making it excellent value. That said, the summer sun can be strong, so bring a hat and sunscreen, and wear comfortable walking shoes.
